“This was an unexpectedly excellent occasion. The two singers, one a renor, the other a mezzo-soprano, were both amazingly superior to any I have heard except in an opera house itself. (In fact, I found out that the mezzo, Serena Romanelli, was rushing off to a rehearsal of "Nabucco" at the Arena di Verona immediately after her performance.) The tenor, Enrico Pertile, was strongly voiced and very sonorous in his interpretations of Pagliacci in "Vesti la gubbia", which brought the house down.
